Teledyne FLIR White House Visit Highlights Methane Emission Detection Technology

As Part of a New White House Taskforce, The Biden-Harris Administration is Learning About New Technologies to Reduce Methane Emissions, Including the Teledyne FLIR G-Series qOGI Thermal Cameras

Teledyne FLIR representatives visited Washington D.C. recently to participate in the Biden-Harris Methane Summit held at the White House. At the event, Craig O'Neill, business development director for Teledyne FLIR, met with top government officials to demonstrate how optical gas imaging (OGI) technology works to find methane leaks tied to oil and gas production, storage, and transmission.

Methane is responsible for around 30% of the current rise in global temperature, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA). Thus, it is one of the U.S. Federal Government's top priorities to investigate sources of leakage and rapidly curtail or eliminate them.

As part of the President's Investing in America agenda, the administration is accelerating the adoption of technologies and tools to address methane emissions and helping the U.S. unlock a win-win opportunity for communities and the economy.

In a press release, the Biden Administration said, "Identifying methane emissions at their source is a critical first step to tackling climate and health impacts and setting and enforcing robust rules of the road, which is why the Administration is focused on deploying innovative methane monitoring technologies."

As part of the event, the White House also noted that the EPA and DOE released a notice of intent to make up to $350 million available for states to help industry voluntarily identify and permanently reduce methane emissions from low-producing conventional wells.

Such efforts can be helped with technology like FLIR G-Series OGI cameras, which detect and visualize methane and other hydrocarbon emissions. Being able to see a gas leak from a safe distance allows leak detection and repair (LDAR) professionals to find and eliminate gas leaks up to nine times faster than with "sniffers" or other traditional leak detection tools.

FLIR Gx320, G620, and Gx620 cameras feature up to 640 × 480 (307,200 pixels) thermal resolution with innovative gas quantification analytics that measure leak type and severity inside the camera, eliminating the need for a secondary device. All models are OOOOa certified while the FLIR Gx320 and Gx620 are ATEX compliant, making these camera models ideal for detecting methane emissions in complex systems.
