Million-pound investment enhances decommissioning specialist’s Shetland operations

A leading specialist in decommissioning waste has announced significant investment in its presence in Shetland.

Recent £1 million investment by Aberdeen-based Phoenix Decom has included designated equipment for its recently completed quayside facility in Lerwick, Shetland.  More than half of overall investment sum has been spent on bringing in a new material handler, a mobile shear unit which will enhance safety by reducing manual handling, plus a new decontamination system which includes a fully enclosed cleaning unit to further reduce risk and environmental concerns.

The 2,400m² site is expected to play a pivotal role in fulfilling the company’s future growth aspirations and will create local jobs in parallel with growing demand for services at the location.

As well as an office in Aberdeen’s Bridge of Don and the Shetland base, Phoenix Decom has an operational site in Dyce and licensed facilities at both Peterhead and Port of Aberdeen. Between them, they have managed more than 40,000 tonnes of reused and recycled materials since the company’s inception in 2021.

With respected industry leader Craig Smith at the helm, Phoenix Decom comprises a knowledgeable team of 15 trusted industry professionals who have collective experience of more than 200 years.  The company is a leading one-stop shop for independent, modern, integrated solutions for the management and disposal of decommissioning waste in the subsea sector.  It prides itself on offering a fresh contemporary approach, and achieves dynamic, tangible and environmentally compliant outcomes for all clients and on all projects.

Commenting on Phoenix Decom’s expansion in Shetland, Craig Smith said: “We are indebted to Lerwick Port Authority for their support in helping us to find a site which positions us correctly to maximise opportunities within the decom sector and create work within the local area.

“This will be crucial in placing us on the correct trajectory to achieve forecast 25% year on year growth, supported by our niche knowledge and expertise and flexible, adaptable service delivery that combine to put us in a unique position.”
