HydraWell’s industry-first technology paves the way towards rigless operations

Well integrity specialist company, HydraWell, has unveiled a revolutionary new technology signalling a major industry shift for the future of Plug and Abandonment activities.

The Norway-based company announced the first successful campaign using HydraCT™, the latest development in its patented Perforation, Wash & Cement (PWC®) technology.

HydraCT™ is an advanced PWC® system specifically designed for coil tubing applications with the potential to cut Co2 emissions by 80% and reduce costs by up to 60%.

HydraWell is currently the only company globally offering this technology.

The successful debut of HydraCT™ in Alaska in late 2022 was the first project of its kind to use coil tubing, eliminating the need to mobilise a rig to site. By running coil tubing as the deployment method, the rigless HydraCT™ campaign spanned less than 24 hours, signalling a huge step-change for the future of P&A activities.

Mark Sørheim, HydraWell Chief Executive Officer, said: “Our first successful campaign demonstrates there is no doubt the HydraCT™ technology is an ideal solution for coil tubing applications.

“Our research has shown there is industry demand for more sustainable and cost-effective alternatives in plug and abandonment operations and we will continue to respond to this demand by creating superior solutions which are carefully aligned with the needs of clients and the market.”

Building on its PWC® track record, HydraWell applied years of experience and deep industry knowledge to transfer existing drill pipe system expertise into the development of its unique coiled tubing system. Coil tubing is particularly useful in remote areas where rig availability is limited or on unmanned or smaller platforms with load capacity restrictions.

“Working without rigs is the next chapter for Plug and Abandonment activities and we will remain at the forefront of guiding how the sector can move away from the need for a rig to pull pipe towards rigless, coiled tubing using HydraCT™,” continued Mark.

“HydraWell regards sustainability as one of its top priorities as we strive for efficiency gains while minimising our environmental footprint.

“HydraCT™ is a key component in the path towards rigless Plug and Abandonment and this breakthrough technology has allowed us to make huge strides in supporting our clients’ environmental savings as well as working for the greater good of the industry as a whole.”

About HydraWell

HydraWell is a global well integrity specialist, providing engineered solutions to replace traditional Plug & Abandonment techniques and downhole tooling solutions.  Established in 2008 and headquartered in Stavanger, the experienced team is committed to developing the most advanced downhole solutions to increase efficiency, reduce operational costs and minimise environmental footprint.  HydraWell push boundaries and is focused on inventing ingenious technologies to transform well operations around the world.

About HydraCT™

HydraCT™ is a self-rotation, jet-propulsion washing and cementing tool which makes it possible to efficiently clean and subsequently cement an annulus (or annuli) without rotation of the deployed pipe or coiled tubing.

HydraCT™ cuts the need to run drill pipe to remediate the annuli and install a permanent isolation barrier without compromising barrier quality or barrier verification using established field proven PWC® techniques. The system delivers superior operational predictability and can save as much as a day of spread time, reducing operational time compared with conventional PWC® operations using a Hydraulic Work Over Unit.
